Next challenge for Seattle Seahawks’ DK Metcalf: a famous baking TV show
Jan 24, 2025, 2:47 PM
In addition to being a Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, DK Metcalf has dunked in an MVP-winning NBA All-Star Celebrity Game performance, run the 100 meter dash in the USA Track & Field Golden Games, and even tried his hand at acting.
Now he’s tackling another off-field challenge: baking on a highly-watched television competition series.
Will a Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson reunion happen in Vegas?
Metcalf is one of five contestants that will appear on “The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Big Game,” which will air next month on The Roku Channel ahead of the Super Bowl. And Metcalf may even have a shot at winning as he does have a background in the kitchen.
The show has been taped but the results aren’t known, so fans will have to see the whole thing play out on Feb. 3 when the episode hits the channel on demand.
Competing alongside Metcalf in the football-themed episode are Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead, Hall of Fame tight end and NFL on Prime Video analyst Tony Gonzalez, sports media personality Katie Nolan, and actress Amy Smart. If you’re confused why Smart makes sense among people with gridiron ties, it’s because she was one of the stars in the 1999 football movie “Varsity Blues.”
If you’ve ever logged into Netflix, you’re probably aware of what “The Great American Baking Show” is – or at least its British counterpart, which is massive these days. Both the American and British versions feature Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith as judges. The American show, which is hosted by actors Zach Cherry (“Severance”) and Casey Wilson (“Gone Girl”), is exclusive to the free The Roku Channel.
Believe it or not, Metcalf isn’t the first Seattle Seahawks player to compete on “The Great American Baking Show.” On a 2022 celebrity holiday edition, Seahawks legend Marshawn Lynch made a pretty hilarious – and surprisingly competent – attempt at winning the coveted Star Baker title.
DK Metcalf on and off the field
Metcalf, who has stated he wants to “transition into acting” after his football playing career, has previously acted in the 2022 movie “Secret Headquarters,” a 2024 episode of “Bel-Air,” and in several commercials. And while this baking foray isn’t technically acting, it is a reality television show that will give the 6-foot-4, 235-pound wideout a chance to display his charm and charisma in front of the camera – and be a credit on his IMDb page.
The 27-year-old Metcalf just wrapped up his sixth NFL season with the Seahawks, hauling in 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games. He is the franchise record holder for receiving yards in a season with 1,303, which came in 2020. That was the first of his two Pro Bowl seasons, with the other coming in 2023.
The Seahawks selected Metcalf in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.
Early Mock Drafts: Who Seattle Seahawks could pick at No. 18
There’s a big question mark this offseason around Metcalf’s future in Seattle, however. He carries a hefty $31.875 million salary cap hit for 2025, his last year under contract, so it’s likely the Seahawks will look to sign him to an extension that would allow them to spread that number out over multiple seasons. The alternative would be for Seattle to look to trade Metcalf in order to prevent needed relief under the cap. The Seahawks are currently projected to be roughly $27.5 million over the cap next season, according to OverTheCap.com.
