After a nearly three-week search, the Seattle Seahawks have found their next offensive coordinator.

The Seahawks hired New Orleans OC Klint Kubiak to fill the same role in Seattle, the team announced Sunday afternoon. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported the news on social media about an hour earlier.

“Coach Mike Macdonald went through a thorough and deliberate process,” Pelissero wrote on social media. “In the end, he went with the experience of Kubiak, who’s still only 37 as he takes his third OC job.”

How would Klint Kubiak fit as Seahawks OC?

Kubiak was the Saints’ OC in 2024 and the Minnesota Vikings’ OC in 2021. He is the son of former Denver Broncos and Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, who won a Super Bowl with the Broncos during the 2015 season.

The 37-year-old Kubiak replaces Ryan Grubb, who was let go on Jan. 6 after one up-and-down season as Seattle’s OC.

Kubiak was one of six reported candidates to interview with the Seahawks, including three candidates who reportedly received in-person second interviews. The other two who reportedly advanced past the initial round of interviews were Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley and Minnesota Vikings assistant OC/assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski. It was reported on Friday that Fraley is staying in Detroit after receiving a promotion that adds run game coordinator to his title.

During Kubiak’s stint in New Orleans this past season, the Saints opened with a combined 91 points over their first two games, which was the second-most by any team over its first two games since the 1970 NFL merger. But after being hit by a slew of injuries on offense, New Orleans finished 24th in scoring, 23rd in passing yards and 14th in rushing yards. The Saints were 5-5 in games that starting quarterback Derek Carr played, but 0-7 when he was sidelined.

When Kubiak was Minnesota’s OC in 2021, the Vikings ranked 14th in scoring, 11th in passing yards and 17th in rushing yards.

Following a head-coaching change in Minnesota, Kubiak spent the 2022 season as Denver’s passing game coordinator/QB coach. During the latter part of that season, he took over the Broncos’ play-calling duties from then-head coach Nathaniel Hackett.

Kubiak spent the 2023 season as the San Francisco 49ers’ passing game coordinator under head coach Kyle Shanahan, who is widely considered one of the league’s top offensive play-callers.

Kubiak’s lone season in San Francisco is one of several interesting ties the Kubiak family has to Shanahan and the 49ers. Back when Gary Kubiak was Houston’s head coach, Shanahan coached under him from 2006 to 2009 in various roles on the Texans’ staff. And Klint Kubiak’s 36-year-old brother, Klay Kubiak, was recently promoted to be the 49ers’ OC. However, Shanahan will continue to call plays for San Francisco.

Klint Kubiak’s other NFL coaching roles include two seasons as Minnesota’s QB coach, three seasons as a Denver offensive assistant and two seasons as a Minnesota offensive quality control coach.

Aside from Kubiak, Fraley and Udinski, the other three reported candidates who interviewed with the Seahawks were former Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich and Green Bay Packers OC Adam Stenavich.
