On The Farm: These Mariners prospects shined in June
Even after top prospect Colt Emerson officially graduated from prospect status this past week, Seattle has six of the top 75 prospects in MLB Pipeline’s recently updated Top 100 rankings:
5. LHP Kade Anderson
8. RHP Ryan Sloan
26. OF Lazaro Montes
43. 2B/OF Michael Arroyo
63. OF Jonny Farmelo
74. SS Felnin Celeston
Anderson and Sloan – who were selected to represent the Mariners in next weekend’s All-Star Futures Game – are two of the top three pitching prospects in Pipeline’s rankings.
Anderson, the No. 3 overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft, has dominated with a dazzling 1.36 ERA over his first 14 pro starts at Double-A Arkansas – highlighted by a 27 2/3-inning scoreless streak. The 21-year-old left-hander has piled up 99 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 66 2/3 innings, and he sits atop the Texas League leaderboard in ERA, WHIP (0.69), opponents’ batting average (.160), strikeout rate (41.4%) and walk rate (3.8%).
Sloan, a 2024 second-round draft pick, has logged a 4.04 ERA in 14 starts with Arkansas. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has 77 strikeouts and 12 walks in 62 1/3 innings – including a perfect six-inning, 11-strikeout outing on May 30. He has a 2.07 ERA over his past four starts.
Montes, a 21-year-old left-handed slugger from Cuba, is slashing .236/.365/.554 with 25 home runs and a .920 OPS in 78 games with Arkansas. The 6-foot-5 outfielder blasted 12 home runs in June and ranks second in the Texas League in homers, third in slugging percentage and third in OPS.
Arroyo, a 21-year-old Colombian native, is slashing .289/.366/.461 with 10 homers and an .827 OPS in 64 games with Arkansas. He’s batting .325 since the start of May.
Meanwhile, Farmelo and Celesten are both enjoying breakout campaigns after their first two pro seasons were derailed by injuries.
Farmelo, a 2023 first-round draft pick, is slashing .270/.387/.483 with 12 homers, 23 stolen bases and an .870 OPS in 74 games with High-A Everett. The 21-year-old outfielder has been on a tear over the past month, batting .321 with eight homers since the start of June.
Celesten, a 20-year-old switch-hitting shortstop from the Dominican Republic, is slashing .315/.404/.533 with 12 homers, 17 steals and a .936 OPS in 72 games with Everett. He had a 25-game hitting streak earlier this season and has been on a recent power surge, blasting seven homers in his past 18 games.
