SEATTLE – Leo Rivas hit a walkoff single in the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Friday night at T-Mobile Park in the opener of a three-game series.
Seattle Mariners 6, Chicago Cubs 5 (10 innings): Box Score
Rivas, who came into the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, slapped a sweeper from Cubs reliever Ryan Zeferjahn into center field to plate Randy Arozarena to score the winning run with two outs.
“In that situation, I’m just trying to hit the ball,” Rivas said. “See the ball, hit the ball. Don’t try and do to much because we’ve already got two outs already. So, something low that can make something happen. That was my approach right there.”
The Mariners had a chance to close the game out in the top of the ninth inning with closer Andrés Muñoz attempting to pick up his 101st career save with the club. But old nemesis Alex Bregman tied the game with a solo homer with one out in an o-2 count on a slider from Muñoz. It was Bregman’s second home run of the night.
The Cubs jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first after a leadoff home run from Pete Crow-Armstrong and a two-run blast by Bregman.
But that lead wouldn’t last too long as Cal Raleigh stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the second and greeted former Mariner and Seattle native Matthew Boyd with a three-run homer into the Mariners’ bullpen in left-center field, his 14th of the season.
The Mariners tacked on another run in the second to take the lead thanks to some heady baserunning from Cole Young. After reaching base on a single, Young took second on a flyball to left field, which allowed him to score on Brendan Donovan’s two-out single to right field.
Seattle extended its lead to 5-3 in the fifth with some help from the Cubs. Brock Rodden reached on a throwing error and moved to second when a balk was called on Boyd. After a groundout moved Rodden to third, Arozarena drove him in with a soft single to center field.
Ian Happ cut the Mariners’ lead to 5-4 with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning of Eduard Bazardo.
Seranthony Domínguez (5-3 record) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first win as a Mariner.
Mariners starter Emerson Hancock gritted his way through 5 2/3 innings after a 30-pitch first. The right-hander surrendered three runs (all in the first) on eight hits while striking out six and walking none, which included stranding runners in the third, fourth and fifth.
“Incredible outing for him,” manager Dan Wilson said. “Maybe not on paper his best outing, but he pitched with his heart tonight and he overcame a lot… Really guts outing by Emerson tonight.”
Boyd allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
