June was a good month to be a top prospect in the Seattle Mariners organization.
Why the Mariners should have an All-Star surprise in 2B Cole Young
Many of the Mariners’ highly regarded farmhands shined during the third month of the season, headlined by another dominant showing from left-hander Kade Anderson and the continued breakout of 20-year-old shortstop Felnin Celesten.
Below is a look at several top prospects who wowed in June, plus a lesser-known name who had a monster month. All prospect rankings are from MLB Pipeline.
LHP Kade Anderson
Anderson, the Mariners’ top-ranked prospect, continued his dominance of Double-A with a month where he allowed less runs than walks and struck out nearly three times as many hitters as he had hits allowed.
The left-hander posted a sparkling 0.79 ERA with two runs, 11 hits and three walks allowed while striking out 33 over 22 2/3 innings. His ERA and 0.62 WHIP each led the Texas League in June. He was also tied for second in strikeouts.

Anderson has a 1.22 ERA and 0.71 WHIP with 99 strikeouts to just 10 walks in 66 2/3 innings over 13 starts in his first season of pro baseball.
SS Felnin Celesten
After having his 25-game hitting streak snapped in late May, Celesten continued his breakout year with another strong month with High-A Everett, showcasing some added power in the process.
Seattle’s sixth-ranked prospect produced a .330/.376/.649 slash line with a 1.025 OPS, seven homers, seven doubles and one triple across 23 games. His seven homers were a career high for a month and tied for the third most in the Northwest League. He also hit for the cycle in a seven-inning game.
On the season, Celesten is batting .322 with a .946 OPS, six homers, 19 doubles and three triples in 70 games.
OF Jonny Farmelo
Farmelo, ranked fifth among Seattle prospects, continued his upward trend at the plate during his best month with High-A Everett this season.
Farmelo slashed .309/.412/.629 with a 1.041 OPS, seven homers, six doubles, two triples and nine stolen bases over 24 games. He finished tied for third in home runs and fourth in walks (16) in the Northwest League.
The 21-year-old outfielder is hitting.260 with an .845 OPS, 11 homers, 13 doubles, six triples and 23 stolen bases in 72 games this year.
OF Lazaro Montes
Montes, the Mariners’ third-ranked prospect, went on a tear at the plate during what was by far his best month since joining Double-A Arkansas last June.
The slugging outfielder hit six homers in his first seven games and ended the month with a .299/.440/759 slash line, 1.199 OPS, 12 homers and four doubles across 25 games. He led the Texas League in homers and RBIs (30).
Montes, 21, is batting .239 with a .930 OPS, 24 homers, 11 doubles and one triple over 75 games this season.
SS Estevan Moreno
Moreno, a 20th-round pick of Notre Dame in last year’s draft, went from slumping at the beginning of June to scorching by month’s end for Single-A Inland Empire.
He entered June on a 1-for-28 slump at the plate over a nine-game stretch dating back to May, but then went on a 13-game hitting streak and collected hits in 16 of his final 18 June games.
The 22-year-old shortstop finished the month with a .333/.372./.655 slash line, 1.027 OPS, six homers, eight doubles, one triple and 19 RBIs in 22 games. His six homers were tied for the second most in the California League.
