But everything’s fun when you’re winning, so what’s a locker room coming off a frustrating loss to San Francisco feeling right now?
It’s a fair question, especially since the defense — which sacked Brock Purdy three times and limited San Francisco to 4 for 12 on third downs — outperformed the offense. Is there a resentment? Frustration? Finger-pointing?
Seahawks safety Ty Okada, who joined The Huddle on Tuesday, was quick to say no. For him, the camaraderie that was evident last year (particularly when Ernest Jones IV publicly defended Sam Darnold) is alive and well.
“No doubt,” when asked about the lack of finger-pointing in the locker room. “And it also comes from a place of, individually, and I don’t mean to speak for everyone, but I think knowing the guys that we have, nobody played their best game on Sunday. So, from that perspective, it’s like there are a lot of areas to improve that we know we’re going to get better at and we’re going to improve defensively even. For us, (the defense) could’ve played a better game as well. And so from that perspective, all three sides of the ball are gonna attack the film and get better from it.”
What we learned about the Broncos this week
The schedule hasn’t been kind to the Denver Broncos (3-2) to open the season, and their only two losses have come against two of the league’s three undefeated teams (San Francisco and Kansas City). Still, the team’s performance itself, regardless of wins and losses, has felt disappointing for fans.
Our opponent preview on The Huddle focused on an up-and-down start for both sides of the ball in Denver.
“Bo Nix certainly has not, to this point, taken that Year 3 leap that I think a lot of fans were hoping for,” The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider said. “In fact, in some ways he’s regressed closer to his form of earlier in his rookie season. There’s a lot they’re trying to work through. It’s not just Nix. They’re not running the ball as efficiently as they need to, they’ve had too many drops from his targets. But overall, they’re still very much trying to find any kind of rhythm they can hang their hat on offensively.”
Seahawks fans aren’t alone in wanting to see more from their team’s offense. This is a battle between two units that’ve struggled, though Seattle’s got Denver beat with scoring here thanks to a stout defense that’s handed them takeaways. The Broncos are 25th in rushing yards per game (86.2 yards) with the lion’s share going to JK Dobbins (220 yards, 1 touchdown) and little else behind him. A slow start from leading receiver Jaylen Waddle (204 yards) and a quarterback who’s completed more than 60% of his pass attempts just twice this year make for an offense averaging just 19 points per game.
Also joining The Huddle for a Week 6 preview was defensive lineman Brandon Pili, Seahawks pregame and postgame show analyst Ray Roberts, and voice of the Seahawks Steve Raible. You can find the full show during Hours 3 and 4 of Tuesday’s edition of Bump and Stacy.
