Seattle Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet has a “legitimate” chance to make his season debut next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPNs Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday.

Charbonnet has been working his way back from a torn ACL suffered during the Seahawks’ 41-6 win over the San Francisco 49ers during the playoffs last season on Jan. 17.

He began this season on the physically unable to perform list, but was designated to return to practice Oct. 1. That means Charbonnet must be activated by next Thursday, Oct. 22, or he would revert to the season-ending injured reserve. However, being activated wouldn’t guarantee that he would play next Sunday in Seattle’s Week 7 game against Kansas City.

Head coach Mike Macdonald on Monday said that Charbonnet will not play this Thursday when the Seahawks face the Denver Broncos.

Seattle’s run game has struggled to find consistency without Charbonnet. It ranks 17th in the league with 106 yards per game and 20th with 3.8 yards per carry. Seahawks running backs Jadaridan Price, Emanuel Wilson and George Holani have also combined for six fumbles, losing four. Charbonnet has zero fumbles on 427 career carries.

Fowler also reported that Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to miss two to three weeks with an ankle injury, leaving Denver without one of its top defensive backs for Thursday’s game. The Broncos could also be without top cornerbacks Patrick Surtain II (ankle) and Riley Moss (ribs), who missed last week’s game. Surtain was listed as a non-participant in practice Monday and Tuesday and Moss was limited both days. Designations were only estimations due to the team not practicing Monday and holding a walk-through practice Tuesday.
