Fife product ties UW baseball’s career HR record

The UW Huskies baseball program now has three home run kings.

Spokane native, UW Huskies product Kittredge makes Orioles debut

Senior outfielder AJ Guerrero tied the program’s career record with his 42nd home run in the purple and gold Wednesday during the fifth-seeded Huskies’ 5-3 loss against ninth-seeded Penn State in their opening game in Pool D of the Big Ten tournament at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.

Guerrero, who is also the program’s all-time hits leader and second in RBIs, tied the home run record held by Ed Erickson and Kyle Conley with an opposite-field, two-run blast to right field to put the Huskies on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. With four hits and three RBIs in total on the day, he upped his career hits record to 270 and moved one RBI shy of tying Kyle Larsen’s career record of 169.

A product of Fife High School, Guerrero is putting the final touches on what’s been a highly decorated four-year career on Montlake. He hit over .300 the past two seasons while earning back-to-back All-Pac-12 honorable mentions, including batting a career-best .345 in 2023. Last season he set career benchmarks with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs.

In 51 regular season game this year, he hit .311 with a .910 OPS, 16 doubles, eight home runs and 35 RBIs. His efforts earned a third-team All-Big Ten selection.

Guerrero will have at least one more game to try and put himself alone atop the UW home run and tie or break the RBI record. The Huskies face fourth-seeded USC on Friday. The winner of Pool D will advance to the Big Ten tournament semifinals May 24 in Omaha. If teams are tied in the standings at the end of pool play, the higher seed advances. So will need a USC loss to Penn State on Thursday and a win over USC on Friday to advance to the tournament semifinals.
