SEATTLE – The No. 19 UW Huskies overcame another sluggish offensive performance to squeak past Utah State 16-14 on Saturday afternoon.

UW Huskies 16, Utah State 14: Box Score

Utah State drove to the Washington 39-yard line in the closing seconds on a 21-yard completion from Grady Brosterhous to Demick Starling. But after a 5-yard illegal formation penalty on the Aggies, Rashawn Clark intercepted Brosterhous’ desperation heave in the end zone to secure the Huskies’ victory.

Washington (2-0) mustered only one touchdown on 12 possessions against Utah State, which lost to FCS-level Idaho State 29-17 in its opener last week.

It was the second straight underwhelming showing from UW’s offense. Last week, the Huskies mustered just 10 points through the first three quarters of their 24-10 season-opening Apple Cup win over the WSU Cougars.

Washington’s only touchdown drive against Utah State (0-2) came in the second quarter, when freshman running back Ansu Sanoe capped an eight-play, 65-yard march with 1-yard plunge to give the Huskies a 10-7 lead. Tyler Robles provided the rest of UW’s scoring, hitting field goals of 30, 26 and 43 yards.

Washington was playing without its top two running backs in Quaid Carr and Jayden Limar, who are both out for an extended period of time after sustaining injuries in the Apple Cup.

But the bigger issue may have been the Huskies’ offensive line, which again struggled to generate much push up front. With limited space to maneuver, UW running backs Trey Cooley, Brian Bonner Jr. and Ansu Sanoe combined for just 49 yards on 21 carries.

Washington dual-threat quarterback Demond Williams Jr. completed 26 of 40 passes for 249 yards and rushed for a team-high 56 yards on 10 carries.

UW again leaned on its defense, which limited the Aggies to just 271 total yards. Brosterhous finished 17-of-28 passing for 196 yards, two TDs and three interceptions. Brosterhous also ran for 81 yards on 21 carries. Utah State running backs Javen Jacobs and Sesi Vailahi combined for minus-6 yards on eight carries.

With the Huskies clinging to a 10-7 lead, Williams scrambled for a 36-yard gain on the final play of the third quarter to set up a 26-yard field goal from Robles early in the fourth.

On the ensuing series, UW safety Alex McLaughlin wrestled the ball away from wideout Kaina Watson for an interception that set up the Huskies in Utah State territory. That led to a 43-yard field goal from Robles, which made it 16-7 with 6:28 to play.

Utah State responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 7-yard TD pass from Brosterhous to Eli Wood that cut the margin to 16-14 with 1:50 remaining.

The Huskies recovered the ensuing onside kick, but were unable to run out the clock after wideout Dezmen Roebuck dropped a first-down pass.

UW then punted the ball back to Utah State, which began its final drive on its own 15-yard line with 47 seconds left and no timeouts. The Aggies drove downfield and put a major scare into the Husky Stadium crowd, which finally exhaled Clark snagged Brosterhous’ desperation heave off a deflection from safety Alex McLaughlin.
