Humpy mascot gets 1st-ever win, then Mariners walk off into ALCS

SEATTLE – Humpy finally won.

And after 24 years, the Seattle Mariners are finally headed back to the American League Championship Series.

On to the ALCS: Polanco lifts Mariners over Tigers in ALDS epic

Midway through the 15th inning of Friday night’s marathon do-or-die playoff game between Seattle and Detroit, the beloved Humpy picked up his first career win in the Mariners’ “Salmon Run” mascot race, eliciting a massive roar from the 47,025 fans packed into T-Mobile Park.

And right on cue, the M’s followed with one of their biggest moments in franchise history.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 15th, Jorge Polanco lined a walkoff single into right field to give the Mariners a 3-2 victory over the Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS. Polanco’s hit sent T-Mobile Park into pandemonium and advanced Seattle to its first ALCS since 2001.

The moment will forever etch Polanco’s name in Mariners lore.

And perhaps Humpy’s too.

The Mariners have held the Salmon Run – a race between four fish mascots around the outfield warning track – at every home game since the start of the 2024 season.

Humpy was always the lovable loser who never won – until Friday.

With the game stretching long into the night, the Mariners decided to hold a second Salmon Run in the 15th. As usual, Humpy fell behind early. But down the stretch, the other salmon ran into each other, which allowed Humpy to surge past them and pick up his first career victory.

Less than 10 minutes later, Polanco sent the Mariners to a place they haven’t been in nearly a quarter-century.
