The end of the season is still a couple of weeks away, but for those thinking ahead to the MLB offseason, here are some key dates to keep in mind.
• World Series ends (TBD)
– Free agency begins. Teams have a five-day window to negotiate with their own free agents after which they are free to sign with other clubs.
– The World Series will run through at least Oct. 27 and as late as Oct. 31.
• 5 days after end of World Series (TBD)
– Free agents are free to negotiate with all 30 clubs.
– Deadline for clubs to exercise contract options. The Mariners have 3 to address: Bryce Miller $6.075 million club option, $15,000 buyout. Remains under club control (Arb 1) if the option is not exercised; Andrés Muñoz $8 million, no buyout; Victor Robles $9 million club option, $500,000 buyout.
– Deadline for clubs to extend qualifying offers with the qualifying offer, which is reportedly set at $23.15 million. Players have 10 days to accept or reject. Randy Arozarena is expected to receive and reject the offer, giving the Mariners draft pick compensation when he signs elsewhere.
– Players must be reinstated to the 40-man roster from the 60 day IL. The Mariners have seven players – Matt Brash, Nick Davila, Logan Evans, Colt Emerson, Will Wilson, Brennan Davis, Luke Raley – on the 60-day IL.
• Nov. 9-12
– GM meetings. In a typical year this where the groundwork or beginnings of groundwork for many trades or signings occurs. This year the impending lockout could speed up transactions as teams look to get deals done before baseball shuts down.
• Nov. 17
– Deadline for clubs to add eligible minor league players to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft. The Mariners took care of their two most notable Rule 5 eligibles, Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo, placing them on the 40-man roster and calling them up in September.
• Nov. 17-19
– Owners meetings in New York.
• November 20
– Non-tender deadline. Deadline for teams to offer arbitration and pre-arbitration players on the 40-man roster who have fewer than six years of major league service time a contract for the upcoming season. Those who are non-tendered immediately become free agents.
• Dec. 7-9
– Winter meetings. Scheduled to be held in Orlando but not expected to happen due to the work stoppage. The MLB Draft Lottery and Rule 5 Draft are scheduled to take place during the meetings but also will not happen during a lockout. It is worth noting following the lockout in 2022 the Rule 5 Draft was canceled.
