Second-year Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young on Wednesday was named one of three finalists for the American League Gold Glove Award at his position.

Drayer: Why Espada is interesting candidate in Mariners’ manager search

The 23-year-old Young led AL second basemen in several defensive categories this season. He was first in defensive runs saved (16), fielding percentage (.990), putouts (223) and assists (397) while also leading the AL in games (157) and innings played (1,350 1/3) at the position.

Young’s 16 defensive runs saved were fifth best in the AL regardless of position and second best among all AL infielders, trailing only Tampa Bay shortstop Taylor Walls (21). The next closest AL second baseman (Kansas City’s Michael Massey) had five defensive runs saved.

The defensive numbers Young posted this season were a step forward from his rookie season when he had a .984 fielding percentage and one defensive run saved over 73 games.

The 2022 first-round pick also showed marked improvements at the plate in his sophomore campaign, slashing .246/.316/.379 with 17 homers, 19 doubles, four triples and 66 RBIs.

Massey and the Chicago White Sox’s Chase Meidroth are the other finalists alongside Young. The Gold Glove winners will be announced at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, during an ESPN broadcast.

Young is attempting to be the first Mariner to win a Gold Glove since catcher Cal Raleigh and utility man Dylan Moore did in 2024. The last M’s second baseman to win the award was Bret Boone in 2004.
