The Seattle Mariners have punched their ticket to the American League Championship Series after an incredible 15-inning, walk-off 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the AL Division Series.
On to the ALCS: Polanco lifts Mariners over Tigers in ALDS epic
It was an epic. A struggle. One of the greatest games in Seattle sports history, and maybe even in MLB postseason history too.
It was the “Battle in Seattle,” as the team’s longtime play-by-play announcer Rick Rizzs called it on the Mariners Radio Network broadcast on Seattle Sports after Jorge Polanco’s bases-loaded, game-winning RBI single.
“The Mariners are going to play for the American League championship! The Mariners win ‘The Battle in Seattle’ in 15 innings!” Rizzs exclaimed amid the roar of over 47,000 fans at T-Mobile Park.
Here’s audio of Rizzs’ call from the radio booth:

Even after the longest winner-take-all game in MLB playoff history, Rizzs and the Mariners won’t get much time to rest. They’ll be off to Toronto as Game 1 of the ALCS at Rogers Centre awaits on Sunday.
The first two games of the best-of-seven series will be north of the border, with Game 3 and Game 4 (plus a potential Game 5) here in Seattle before going back to Toronto for the final two potential games.
It will be an interesting dynamic, to say the least. The Mariners and Blue Jays are tied together as expansion mates, both having joined MLB’s American League in 1977. And due to Seattle’s close proximity to British Columbia, Blue Jays fans have been known to invade T-Mobile Park during regular season series between the two teams.
Don’t bet on that happening in the ALCS, based on how fervent the crowds were for Seattle’s three ALDS games. Mariners fans are probably making sure there aren’t any tickets left for Jays fans to snatch up this time.
