How players Mariners traded have fared since deadline

It’s been just about a month since the Seattle Mariners made a trio of moves before the MLB trade deadline.

We’ve seen the early returns pay off pretty well for Seattle with Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez each producing as key cogs the lineup of a Mariners team heavily favored to reach the playoffs. And to a lesser extent, left-hander Caleb Ferguson has helped patch a hole in the club’s bullpen.

What about the players the Mariners traded away? Well, not so good thus far. But it will be quite a while until we know the true magnitude of what Seattle gave up.

For now, here’s a look at what all six have done since getting moved to new organizations in July. Prospect rankings are from MLB’s Pipeline’s list at the time of each trade.

Suárez trade

Traded to Arizona: first baseman Tyler Locklear (No. 9 prospect), right-hander Hunter Cranton (No. 16) and right-hander Juan Burgos (No. 17).

Locklear is getting everyday reps at first base for Arizona as the replacement for Naylor, who was acquired in a separate trade. In 23 games with the D-backs, the 24 year old is slashing .169/.256/.247 with a .503 OPS, two home runs, five RBIs and a 36% strikeout rate. Locklear hit .422 with a 1.297 OPS, nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 21 July games with Triple-A Tacoma before the trade.

Cranton was assigned to Double-A following the trade, but he was placed on the seven-day injured list soon after and hasn’t appeared in a game yet. Cranton, who had missed most of the with a concussion and shoulder injury, had pitched eight games in High-A Everett before the deal.

Burgos was initially sent to Triple-A after the trade but has been with Arizona since Aug. 9. The 25 year old has a five runs over six innings in eight outings. Burgos started the year in Double-A before reaching the majors and appearing in four games for the Mariners prior to the trade.

Naylor deal

Traded to Arizona: left-hander Brandyn Garcia (No. 13) and right-hander Ashton Izzi (No. 16)

Garcia was just called back up to the majors by Arizona on Friday. He’s allowed three runs in 1 1/3 innings over two appearances in the majors with the Diamondbacks. He also posted a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings over six appearances with Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate. The 25 year old made his MLB debut with the M’s on July 21.

Izzi has a 4.57 ERA with 17 strikeouts and six walks allowed over 21 2/3 innings in five starts in High-A since the trade. The 21 year old was pitching in High-A Everett for the M’s.

Ferguson trade

Traded to Pittsburgh: right-hander Jeter Martinez (No. 13)

Martinez, 19, was assigned to the Pirates’ Single-A affiliate on Aug. 26. He allowed three runs in one inning of relief during is only appearance since the deal. Martinez was starting at Single-A Modesto while with the Mariners.
