Suspension reduced for Mariners’ Victor Robles, will start immediately

The appeal process for Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles has resulted in a reduced suspension from the original 10 games.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles’ 10 game-suspension has been reduced to seven games after going through an appeal process with MLB and the MLB Players Association, reports Seattle Sports’ Shannon Drayer.

Robles’ ban will start immediately with Friday’s series opener in Cleveland. It will leave the Mariners down a man on their active roster until he returns.

The right fielder’s suspension stems from a viral incident during a minor league rehab assignment on Aug. 17 with Triple-A Tacoma.

Robles chucked his bat towards Las Vegas Aviators pitcher Joey Estes after being hit by a pitch on a swing. It was the second time he had been hit on a swing by Estes in that game, and Estes had hit him earlier in the week in what was Robles’ first rehab game.

There was also some history between the two from last season, as Estes plunked Robles during a September MLB game.

The two ended up squaring off again in the majors Sunday, with Estes getting Robles to fly out to center field.

Robles returned from his rehab assignment on Aug. 23 and played in four of Seattle’s five games before the ruling on his appeal. The second-year Mariner was eligible to play before serving his suspension while it was in abeyance due to the appeal process.

Robles has been limited to just 14 MLB games this season because of a fracture and dislocation suffered in his shoulder on a spectacular catch crashing into the netting in foul territory in right field at Oracle Park in San Francisco on April 6.

The 28 year old is batting .246 with a .565 OPS, three doubles and four stolen bases this season.

Robles put together the best stretch of his career after signing with Seattle last June. In 77 games with the Mariners, he batted .328 with an .860 OPS, 20 doubles, four home runs, 26 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in 31 attempts.

Robles’ efforts in 2024 earned him a two-year contract extension through the 2026 campaign last August.
