Mariners’ Josh Naylor on T-Mobile Park: ‘I think it’s a hitter’s park’

The Seattle Mariners’ home ballpark is, quite literally, the toughest ballpark on hitters in MLB.
Per Statcast, T-Mobile Park in Seattle has baseball’s lowest Park Factor, which measures how hard it is to create offense in a given stadium compared to the league average. T-Mobile Park also is the hardest place in the league to score runs and get a hit, and the easiest to strike out in.

But not every hitter has an especially hard time at T-Mobile Park. In fact, some excel so well at the plate in Seattle that they might not even know it is a notorious pitcher’s park.
The Seattle Mariners themselves now have one such hitter.
New M’s first baseman Josh Naylor joined Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob in an interview that aired Thursday, and host Bob Stelton posed a question about T-Mobile Park.
“How is it for you hitting in this park?” Stelton asked. “It’s got a reputation, obviously, as being a pitcher’s park.”
If you listen closely, you can hear Naylor’s surprise.
“Really?” Naylor interjected.
“I mean, I’ve always liked hitting here.”
Once you take a look at Naylor’s numbers, you can see why that was his response. And it’s probably why he’s seemed plenty happy calling Seattle his new home.
“I’ve only been on the away side and I couldn’t wait to check off this place and come here and hit,” Naylor continued. “I think it’s a hitter’s park more than a pitcher’s park, to be honest. I think it’s easy to hit here.”
So about those numbers.
In Naylor’s career, he’s played 32 games in Seattle and has a .282/.317/.536 slash line for an .853 OPS with eight home runs.
His performance at T-Mobile Park has been even better ever since he put on a Mariners uniform, though.
In 15 games at home since his late July trade from Arizona, Naylor is slashing .353/.421/.667 for a huge 1.088 OPS with four homers, four doubles, 10 runs and 10 RBIs.
The 32 games Naylor has now played at T-Mobile Park ranks fourth among all stadiums in MLB he has visited in his career, behind only the three other stadiums he called home – Cleveland’s Progressive Field (244 games), San Diego’s Petco Park (62 games) and Arizona’s Chase Field (59 games). Despite that, only the 34 homers he’s hit in Cleveland ranks higher than his eight in Seattle.
T-Mobile Park might be better for pitchers in general, but for Naylor, it clearly is a hitter’s park.
