Cijntje shines as 3 prospects represent M’s in Futures Game

Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje displayed his unique abilities on the national stage Saturday.

The switch-pitching Cijntje recorded outs with both arms during a scoreless inning of work in the American League’s 4-2 loss to the National League during the All-Star Futures Game at Truist Park in Atlanta, the site of next week’s Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

Cijntje, a first-round pick in 2024, punched out two batters right-handed and induced a flyout against the only batter he faced left-handed during the second inning.

He struck out top-ranked Brewers prospect Jesús Made (the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline) with an 85.5 mph curveball and fourth-ranked Marlins prospect Joe Mack on a 97 mph fastball.

Cijntje needed just two pitches when he turned around to pitch left-handed to get top Dodgers prospect Josue De Paula to flyout. De Paula went 1 for 2 with a three-run home run and was named the game’s MVP.

Cijntje, ranked as Seattle’s No. 8 prospect and No. 79 in all of baseball, also allowed a an infield single while pitching right-handed.

The 22 year old was one of three players to represent the Mariners in MLB’s showcase of top prospects.

Outfielder Lazaro Montes, Seattle’s No. 2 prospect and 29th overall, walked in his only plate appearance and was on deck when the American League made its final at-bat of the game.

Montes did impress when he showed off his power during practice. The lefty slugger mashed a ball to the top of the second level in right field.

Harry Ford, the Mariners’ fifth-ranked prospect and No. 56 overall, was the started at catcher for the AL. He struck out during an eighth-pitch at-bat in his only plate appearance. It was Ford’s third time playing in the Futures Game.
