Mariners get a 5th All-Star as Randy Arozarena replaces Julio

The Seattle Mariners will still have four players representing them at the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday in Atlanta. Left fielder Randy Arozarena has been added to the American League roster after teammate Julio Rodríguez bowed out of the festivities Friday.

This is the second All-Star nomination for the 30-year-old Arozarena, who previously went to the Midsummer Classic in 2023 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Arozarena enters play Friday with a .247/.354/.446 slash line for an .800 OPS. He leads the Mariners with 20 doubles and is second with 15 home runs. He’s also tied with Rodríguez for both the team lead with 15 stolen bases and second place in RBIs with 44. Arozarena has been caught stealing just twice this season.

Arozarena ranks 20th in MLB with 3.2 WAR, per Baseball Reference, which puts him fourth among AL outfielders.

A recent surge at the plate has propelled Arozarena to the All-Star nod. In his last 12 games, he’s hitting .333 (15 for 45) with seven homers, 12 RBIs, an .800 slugging mark and 1.180 OPS. All seven of those homers came in a nine-game stretch from June 30 through July 9, including a stretch where he hit five homers in as many games.

Arozarena, who was the 2020 ALCS MVP and 2021 AL Rookie of the Year, is well on pace for his fifth straight season of at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, a milestone he has hit in every full MLB season of his career.

Arozarena was acquired by the Mariners in a trade last July from Tampa Bay. He was seen as the biggest bat to move around the 2024 MLB trade deadline.

The Mariners now officially have five All-Stars for 2025, which is the most since Seattle had five All-Stars in 2003 (Jamie Moyer, Edgar Martinez, Bret Boone, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Ichiro Suzuki). It’s the fourth time in team history the M’s have had five or more All-Stars in a single season.

In addition to Arozarena and Rodríguez as Mariners position players named AL All-Stars this season, MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh was named the starting catcher for the AL. He has also entered the field for the Home Run Derby on Monday. The M’s have two pitchers on the AL staff, as well: starter Bryan Woo and closer Andrés Muñoz.

The Mariners will end the first half with three games at Detroit’s Comerica Park starting at 4:10 p.m. Friday, with radio coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 3 p.m. with the pregame show. The Mariners (48-45) are a game out of the AL’s third wild card and seven games back in the AL West, while the Tigers (59-35) lead the AL Central by 13 games.
