Mariners’ Lazaro Montes blasts 1st HR in MLB debut

Lazaro Montes has wasted no time showing what he can do in the big leagues.

The Seattle Mariners rookie and top outfield prospect didn’t make an out in any of his first three plate appearances in his MLB debut Tuesday, and each was better than the last.

First he drew a walk and scored a run in the second inning. Then he hit an RBI single in the third inning for his first MLB hit.

And then in the fifth inning, he crushed a two-strike slider at the bottom of the zone for 407-foot solo home run to dead center field at Fenway Park for his first homer for the Mariners (click here for the video).

The homer, which pushed Seattle’s lead to 9-1 over the Red Sox, made Montes the 11th Mariners player with at least two hits in their MLB debut, and the first since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.

He also became the youngest player in Mariners history to hit a home run in their MLB debut, beating Alvin Davis (1984) by nearly two years.

Montes’ homer came just two innings after his first big league hit, which saw him drive in Josh Naylor with an RBI single to right field (click here to watch the hit).

The hit pushed an early Mariners lead to 7-1 over the Red Sox and rookie pitcher Jedixson Paez.

Montes drew a five-pitch walk in his first trip to the plate, which loaded the bases in the second inning. Montes would score one of the Mariners’ five runs in the frame, as he was brought home on Randy Arozarena’s three-run homer over the Green Monster in left field.

The 21-year-old Montes sat at a 1.000 batting average after five innings in the bigs, which came just hours after he was officially called up Tuesday morning from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners promoted Montes, the No. 56 prospect in baseball and No. 5 Mariners prospect per MLB Pipeline, as a September call-up when active rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players on Tuesday. News of his promotion was reported first Sunday night, with the Mariners making it official Tuesday morning.

Montes made his debut hitting seventh in the batting order and serving as Seattle’s designated hitter. He ranks second in all of the minor leagues this season with 38 home runs, a career high that he set while spending time with both the Double-A Arkansas Travelers and Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.
