Mariners Lineup: Lazaro Montes ‘ready to go’ in MLB debut

Slugging Seattle Mariners prospect Lazaro Montes is in the lineup to make his MLB debut Tuesday after being one of the team’s two September call-ups.

Seattle Mariners sign LHP, add Montes for September call-ups

The 21-year-old Montes has been penciled in for the No. 7 spot in the batting order as the designated hitter for Seattle in Game 2 of the team’s three-game series at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.

Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reported shortly after the lineup was revealed that Montes said he’s “ready to go! Ready to win!”

The Cuban-born Montes is the No. 56 overall and No. 5 Mariners prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline. He has hit a combined 38 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season, which is a career high and puts him second on the leaderboard for all minor leagues in 2026.

With Montes in action, trade deadline addition Taylor Ward is on the bench for the M’s. Seattle’s lineup is mostly unchanged from Monday other than switch-hitting rookie Brock Rodden playing third base and hitting ninth.

The Mariners have Bryan Woo (9-9, 4.36 ERA) on the mound, while the Red Sox have rookie Jedixson Paez set to start.

The 22-year-old Paez is a right-hander who the Red Sox initially lost to the Chicago White Sox as a Rule 5 draft pick in December. Paez pitched three innings over three appearances for Chicago before being returned to the Red Sox in early April. Paez has pitched 20 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season, with 10 of those appearances being starts.

Boston (75-63) enters the day up 5 1/2 games for the second of the three American League wild cards. The Mariners (64-74) are 5 1/2 games back of a playoff spot and six games out in the AL West.

Tuesday’s game is set for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports set to start at 2:30 with the pregame show.
