Mariners Roster Move: J.P. Crawford returns from 10-day IL

The Seattle Mariners have activated veteran infielder J.P. Crawford from the 10-day injured list in time for him to play his old team.

Crawford will return to Seattle’s lineup Tuesday in Game 2 of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies, who the Mariners traded with to acquire Crawford back in 2019. To make room on the 26-man active roster, switch-hitting infielder Leo Rivas has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

The 31-year-old Crawford has been on the IL since late July with left wrist inflammation. It was his third stint on the IL this season, coming after a 10-day stint for a right hand contusion in June and a seven-game delayed start to the season after he was limited in spring training by right shoulder inflammation.

Crawford is slashing .212/.330/.345 for a .675 OPS with 10 home runs, 11 doubles, a 0.6 bWAR, and 50 walks to 74 strikeouts in 87 games this season.

He had a strong start in the power department, with all of his homers coming by June 3. But he was hit on the hand by a fastball from Detroit pitcher Framber Valdez on June 5, which eventually landed him on the IL. Crawford struggled upon his return, slashing just .184/.282/.237 for a .519 OPS in 32 games before going back on the IL with the wrist issue.

Crawford is coming off of a three-game rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, where he hit 4 for 11 (.364) with a homer.

While Crawford played shortstop exclusively during his rehab stint, he is starting at third base Tuesday. He moved from short to third base earlier to season to accommodate the arrival of rookie Colt Emerson.

Both Emerson and starting third baseman Brendan Donovan are currently on the injured list. Emerson is set for season-ending wrist surgery Wednesday while Donovan is on the seven-day concussion IL. Switch-hitting rookie Brock Rodden has been filling in at shortstop since Emerson went on the IL, but he played third base more than any other position in his time in Triple-A this year.

This is the eighth season with Seattle and 10th in the big leagues for Crawford, who recently passed 1,000 career MLB games and was named one of the top 50 players in Mariners history earlier this month.

Crawford was a first-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2013 MLB Draft. He’ll match up in the current series with the Phillies against his relative Justin Crawford, an outfielder who was a first-round pick in 2022 by Philadelphia.

The 28-year-old Rivas was a hero for the Mariners in their weekend series win over the Chicago Cubs, delivering a walkoff RBI single in the 10th inning on Friday and adding an RBI single in the ninth inning Saturday that set the stage for Randy Arozarena to hit a walkoff homer.

In 47 games with the Mariners this season, Rivas is slashing .147/.270/.190 for a .460 OPS.
