Mariners rookie Colt Emerson to have season-ending surgery

Touted Seattle Mariners rookie shortstop Colt Emerson’s season is over.

Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reported Monday that Emerson is set to undergo season-ending wrist surgery on Wednesday. Drayer added Emerson should be ready for the start of spring training in 2027, though he will be closely monitored when it begins.

The 21-year-old Emerson was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 14 with left wrist tendon inflammation following extended struggles at the plate in the majors. In 69 games, he batted .190 with a .581 OPS, eight homers, six doubles, one triple, 15 walks and 83 strikeouts.

Emerson was originally slated to be optioned to the minors before he was placed on the IL. However, during a meeting with manager Dan Wilson and team executives about being demoted, he revealed the extent his wrist issue was bothering him, which led to him being placed on the IL, according to a report from The Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish.

Emerson entered this season as the No. 7 prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. He signed an eight-year, $95 million contract extension with the club on March 31 that will keep him with the Mariners through at least the 2033 season. It’s the largest contract ever signed by a player before making their MLB debut.

Emerson was called up to make his MLB debut May 17 and quickly made an impact for the big-league club. The left-handed-hitting infielder homered in his second career game, and he batted .241 with an .867 OPS, six homers, five doubles, one triple and a 145 wRC+ in 24 games through June 16. But in 45 games after that stretch, Emerson hit just .162 with a .420 OPS, two homers, one double and a 38.3% strikeout rate.
