Weeks after seeing their first-round pick, defensive end L.J. Collier, carted off the practice field with an ankle sprain, the Seahawks have been dealt another injury blow – and potentially two – to their 2019 draft class.

Seahawks fail to find end zone on offense in loss to Vikings

Second-round pick DK Metcalf will have knee surgery, head coach Pete Carroll said after Seattle’s 25-19 preseason loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The rookie wide receiver missed the game with what general manager John Schneider called a “sore knee.”

“DK’s got an injury to his knee that we found after a couple days,” Carroll said. “It happened a few days back. So there’s something, we’re gonna do some work on it probably Tuesday and get him back in a hurry. We’re disappointed for him because he was off to a fantastic start. But I don’t think this is going to derail him for long, but he does have to have some work done, but we’ll know about that when back into town.”

Asked whether “some work” meant surgery, Carroll said yes.

Metcalf has been a highlight of Seattle’s offseason training. Even though he wasn’t Seattle’s top pick, the 6-foot-3, 229-pound Ole Miss standout has generated the most fanfare of any rookie and has looked the part of a starter with several impressive receptions through training camp.

While he had a stellar showing at this year’s NFL scouting combine, injury concerns likely contributed to Metcalf’s slide into the late second round, where Seattle selected him 64th overall. But despite his injury history, Metcalf remained healthy through the full offseason and most of training camp. His two injuries (knee and oblique) have come within only the last three weeks.

Seattle had another injury scare Sunday when second-round safety Marquise Blair – the team’s second overall pick this year – was carted off the field in the second half. Carroll said Blair was suffering from back spasms.

“He had a play and his back got tight a little bit and it kept getting tighter and he couldn’t go back,” Carroll said.

Latest on Paxton Lynch

Backup quarterback candidate Paxton Lynch remained in concussion protocol at the time of Carroll’s postgame press conference, so the head coach was unable to provide an update. Lynch was injured late in the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit from Vikings cornerback Holton Hill (Hill was later ejected).

“He felt like he was OK,” Carroll said of Lynch. “But he’s still gotta pass those tests, so we’ve got to recognize the process and take care of that.”
