Ahead of the Week 6 matchup, Seattle Sports’ Stacy Rost highlights two numbers that matter. Below is a transcription of the video at the top of this post. It has been edited for its clarity.
• 10 – The Seahawks are 3-2 after losing to the 49ers, and while they were 3-2 last year through five weeks, a lot of things feel different. Turnovers are their number one problem through five games this season, but I was comparing stats offensively from last year to this year, and I noticed that one of the biggest gaps is first-half scoring. The reason that your first number is 10 is this year’s Seahawks are averaging just 10 points per game in first-half offense. That is a drop of several spots from last year where they were third averaging 14.8 first-half points per game. So, they’ve gone from third to 21st.
Why does that matter? While Jaxon Smith-Njigba is still finding the end zone and still getting a ton of yards, you’re now playing from behind, you’re giving the opposing defense more opportunities with turnovers. It’s just an entirely different game when you’re playing from behind, and the Seahawks are finding themselves doing that a little more than they were last year. So, if they could score more than 10 points in the first half against the Broncos, I’m feeling much better about that.
• 4 – The Denver Broncos are allowing the fourth-most rushing yards per game. I don’t know that the Seahawks, who are down to their third and fourth string running backs, are going to be able to get the run going against Denver just because they’re allowing a ton of rushing yards. Seattle is 31st in EPA per rush right now, but I do think if there was ever an opportunity to maybe get a little momentum, it might as well be against a defense that surprisingly has been underperforming to expectations this year.
