Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young has what you might call sneaky pop at the plate.

And it sneaked up on the Los Angeles Angels not one but twice in a Mariners win Monday night.

The 22-year-old Young put together his first multi-home run game in the big leagues to help Seattle take down the Angels 6-2 to open a six-game homestand.

Young put the Mariners on the board in his first trip to the plate in the third inning, drilling a 3-2 sinker from Angels starter Ryan Johnson for a 412-foot homer to center. The homer, which cut an Angels lead to 2-1, was Young’s first in the big leagues to not be pulled to right field.

Young returned to the familiar confines of the seats beyond right field at T-Mobile Park with his second homer – but not before smashing the ball off the facade of the second deck with his first-pitch, 406-foot shot off of lefty reliever Mitch Farris.

Young’s second homer was a two-run shot that pushed a Seattle lead to 6-2. The 2022 first-round MLB Draft pick went 3 for 3 at the plate Monday a day after a multi-hit game in Cleveland.

With his big night, Young now has nine homers on the season. He’s slashing .260/.321/.392 for a .713 OPS at the plate and is one of just three players in baseball to play all 86 of their team’s games this year. Young also entered Monday fifth in MLB in Baseball Reference’s defensive WAR metric at 1.5.

The Mariners will continue their series with the Angels at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. The two teams will take a rare mid-series break Wednesday with a World Cup knockout stage match taking place across the street at Lumen Field, then will play the finale at 6:40 p.m. Thursday.
