Two ways Seahawks are impressing Salk at camp

It was awesome to be out at Seattle Seahawks training camp practice and get to see them with the pads on actually hitting. Two big things jumped out to me.

Seahawks’ Macdonald: New OC Fleury brings his own twist

No. 1: If you aren’t buying the Seahawks, it’s because you’re not buying Mike Macdonald. And if you’re not buying Mike Macdonald, you just don’t understand anything about football.

This guy is legit.

I think Mike might end up being, when it’s all said and done, a Hall of Fame coach. And I know that sounds homer, and I know him saying that way too early. I’m telling you, he just seems to combine so many different philosophies and does it so well. He’s in complete command of everything going on in this organization, incredibly relatable with the other players and with the other coaches. But then with a really strong sense of how to continue to evolve and do new things.

I love his phrasing, and once you start to understand things like old-school principals with new-school methods, they make a lot of sense. This is a guy who believes in the fundamentals, but also in finding ways to always look for that edge and use analytics or use whatever the next thing is to evolve it and make it better.

To believe in the Seahawks is to believe in Mike Macdonald. And I think that’s very easy to do.

The other one is this, and this is something I can’t believe is going to come out of my mouth, because we have not said this in years. I watched the one-one-one pass-rush drills today. The offense dominated.

The offensive line – I know this sounds crazy – the offensive line dominated the defensive line. Now that doesn’t mean they want every rep. Credit to Byron Murphy, who had the single best rep of the day. I thought he was about to decapitate the offensive guard, who I think was Christian Haynes. But overall, the O-line more than held their own. I would say they won the day in a big, big way.

I don’t know if the offensive line is going to be a huge strength of the team or not this year, but if they can continue on the trajectory that they built by the end of last season, that’s gonna be a very different version of a Seahawks offense than we’ve seen here in well over a decade.
