Seahawks Insider: Sheldon Richardson’s job description not as complicated now

Sheldon Richardson’s résumé includes playing everything from nose tackle to linebacker.

So it was a surprise that his answer was so short when he was asked what position he’ll be playing in Seattle.

“I’m playing three,” Richardson said, meaning the three-technique defensive tackle who lines up on the outside shoulder of a guard. “That’s all I know.”

That’s it?

“That’s it,” Richardson said. “This defense is kind of stacked.”

Richardson is one of eight players on this defense to have made a Pro Bowl, and even in that elite company, he stands out because of his versatility. He has played defensive tackle. He has played nose tackle. He was even a linebacker at times last season with the Jets, dropping into coverage.

“They’ve done everything with the guy because he’s just an all-around good athlete and good football player,” coach Pete Carroll said. “We’ll start him off playing inside. We’ve got to get him ready to play in a week’s time and then we’ll see how things progress from there as we always do.”

As for Richardson’s preference? He said it’s to be on the field.

“I play football, you know,” Richardson said. “I love playing anywhere on the field as long as I am playing, but my home is three-technique so they know where I’m best suited at and I’ll make the best of it.”
