Report: Seahawks hiring ex-NFL OC who worked with Kubiak

The Seattle Seahawks have already added one coach with NFL offensive coordinator experience to their coaching staff this offseason. Why not another?

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday morning that the Seahawks are hiring Justin Outten onto head coach Mike Macdonald’s staff as run game specialist. Outten put in a season as as the offensive coordinator in Denver, where he crossed paths with new Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak, who comes to Seattle after spending 2024 as New Orleans Saints OC.

The reported move immediately received praise from another longtime NFL Network insider, Ian Rapoport, who called it “another smart hire” by the Hawks in a social media post.

The 41-year-old Outten served as Broncos offensive coordinator in 2022, which was the first year of quarterback Russell Wilson’s failed two-year stint in Denver after a blockbuster trade from the Seahawks. He was OC under Nathaniel Hackett, an offensive-minded coach who was previously a successful OC with the Aaron Rodgers-led Green Bay Packers. Outten was Packers tight ends coach from 2019-21 under Hackett, and before that was on the Atlanta Falcons staff for three seasons.

While Outten was Hackett’s OC, it was Hackett who called the offensive plays until he was fired with two games to go in the 2022 season. Then it was actually Kubiak, who was Denver’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the time, who took over play-calling duties for the final two games of 2022 under interim head coach Jerry Rosburg.

Most recently, Outten was on the Tennessee Titans coaching staff. He was the team’s offensive run game coordinator and running backs coach in 2023, then the tight ends coach in 2024.

As a player, Outten was a three-year letterwinner as a center on the Syracuse Orange offensive line. The Doylestown, Penn., native began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Syracuse in 2007, then spent 2008-15 at Westfield High School in Texas as an assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

The Seahawks announced a trio of additions to the offensive coaching staff under Kubiak earlier this week: offensive line coach John Benton, quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and offensive assistant Michael Byrne.
