Mike Macdonald’s reaction to Seahawks on Hard Knocks: ‘Good’

"Let's just focus on being us. I think it's that simple," Mike Macdonald said of the Seahawks being featured on the documentary series.

For the first time in franchise history, the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will be the featured team on an upcoming season of HBO’s long-running NFL documentary TV series “Hard Knocks.”

Two ways Seattle Seahawks can combat Rams’ bold additions

On its face, it doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of thing that the Seahawks would embrace just based on the fact that a pervasive production crew covering the team 24/7 during training camp could be seen as a distraction.

Head coach Mike Macdonald isn’t looking at it that way, though.

In a conversation Thursday at Seahawks headquarters with Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, Macdonald was asked about “Hard Knocks” making its way to the shores of Lake Washington this summer.

“What was your reaction when you heard that ‘Hard Knocks’ was going to be featuring the Seattle Seahawks?” Mike Salk asked.

“Good,” Macdonald quickly responded.

“You were psyched about it? It’s what you wanted?” Salk continued.

“Yeah. You know me. (Seahawks president of football operations and general manager John Schneider) told me and I was like, alright. I mean, let’s do it. So, I mean, good,” Macdonald said.

Macdonald said that the Seahawks haven’t discussed “Hard Knocks” as a team yet, but he has a pretty good approach to that discussion prepared.

“I think if you look at it through the lens of like, hey, this is an opportunity for us to be us. And again, trust what’s going to end up coming out to the rest of the world,” he said. “But unless we’re us, then that’s not going to come out. And so let’s just focus on being us. I think it’s that simple.”

But as Macdonald concluded, he did hint a bit at the challenges that “Hard Knocks” could present.

“Now, you get a camera crew running around, I’m miked up every day, like – we’ll learn and adapt and do all those type of things. It’s all good.”
