After mass exodus, UW men’s hoops reportedly adds 3 transfers

Since wrapping up a disappointing first season in the Big Ten last month, the UW Huskies men’s basketball team has seen a mass exodus from its program.

According to On3.com, seven UW players have entered the transfer portal over the past few weeks: guard Tyler Harris, guard Mekhi Mason, forward Wilhelm Breidenbach, forward Christian King, center KC Ibekwe, guard Jase Butler and forward Dominique Diomande. Butler has since committed to Colorado State, while Diomande has committed to BYU.

The Huskies went 13-18 this season under first-year head coach Danny Sprinkle, including a last-place finish in the Big Ten at 4-16 in conference play.

But over the past few days, Sprinkle has started to replenish his roster. According to reports from On3.com and ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, UW has secured a trio of quality transfers in East Tennessee State point guard Quimari Peterson, Rutgers center Lathan Sommerville and German forward Hannes Steinbach.

Here’s a look at the trio of incoming Huskies.

• G Quimari Peterson, East Tennessee State

Peterson, a 6-foot-1 rising senior point guard, was the Southern Conference player of the year this past season at ETSU. He led the league in scoring with 19.5 points per game and shot a league-high 42.2% from 3-point range, which was the 17th-best mark in Division I. He also averaged 3.7 assists and a league-high 2.0 steals per game, while helping the Buccaneers to a 19-13 overall record and a 12-6 conference mark.

UW will be Peterson’s fourth college team. He played the past two seasons at ETSU, where he started all 67 games. Prior to that, he averaged 13.5 points per game during one season at John A. Logan College – a junior college in Illinois. He began his college career at Indiana State in 2021-22, but appeared in just four games that season.

• C Lathan Sommerville, Rutgers

Sommerville, a 6-foot-10, 275-pound rising sophomore, was Rutgers’ third-leading scorer this past season. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Scarlet Knights, who went 15-17 overall and 8-12 in Big Ten play. He was a four-star recruit in high school.

• F Hannes Steinbach, Germany

Steinbach, a 6-foot-10 German forward who turns 19 next month, is considered one of the top European prospects in his age group, according to ESPN’s Givony. Playing in Germany’s top league, he has averaged 6.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Würzburg Baskets in the Bundesliga this season.
