Top Seattle Mariners prospect Colt Emerson is making a strong early case for a chance to break spring camp with the big league club.
Emerson, the consensus top prospect in the Mariners’ farm system, continued his impressive start to Cactus League play with a pair of hits, including a triple, and added a web gem on defense during Seattle’s game against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday.
Why top two Mariners’ pitching prospects have Cal’s attention
Emerson’s day started with an infield single in the bottom of the second inning that loaded the bases with no outs during a two-run inning for the M’s.
The big hit of the day for Emerson came in the sixth when he laced a 101.8-mph line drive into center field off a sweeper for Cleveland left-hander Doug Nikhazy for an RBI triple (with a little help from the sun in Peoria, Ariz.) that scored Michael Arroyo for a 6-2 M’s lead. He came around to score on Luis Suisbel’s double in the next at-bat.

Even the one out the 20-year-old shortstop made during his three plate appearances Thursday was on a well-struck ball, a 101-mph line drive to the center fielder.
Emerson’s standout defensive play came in the second when he made a diving catch to his left at shortstop and threw back to second for an inning-ending double play.
After his second straight two-hit performance in Cactus League play, Emerson is 4 for 11 (.364 average) with three RBIs, one walk and three strikeouts over five games. He’s doubled his total from last spring when he went 2 for 17 over 10 games. Julio Rodríguez, Brennan Davis and Brock Rodden are the only Mariners with more hits than Emerson this spring with five apiece.
