Watch: Mariners put on a doubles clinic early vs Guardians

The top of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup has the potential to do a lot of damage this season. Cleveland Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo found that out rather quickly during a Cactus League game on Thursday.

Why top 2 Seattle Mariners’ pitching prospects have Cal’s attention

Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena hit back-to-back-to-back doubles off Cantillo with one out in the first inning to give the M’s a 2-0 lead early in their sixth game of the spring.

Raleigh got the doubles parade started when he took advantage of a fastball left over the plate and pulled a line drive over third baseman Carter Kieboom and down the left-field line. Rodríguez kept it going with a low line drive that ricocheted off Kieboom’s glove as he attempted to make a diving play and rolled into the corner in left field. And Arozarena punctuated it with a deep fly ball that bounced off the outstretched glove of Guardians center fielder Angel Martinez on the warning track.

The hits continued what’s been a solid start to the spring for Raleigh, Rodríguez and Arozarena. Raleigh hit his first homer and had two hits on Monday against the White Sox, Rodríguez entered the day 4 for 7 with two doubles in three games, and Arozarena came in 3 for 7 with two walks over three games. 

Cantillo, who had a 3.21 ERA over 95 1/3 innings in the majors last season, would go on to face only one more batter in the first inning before getting pulled at 22 pitches with two outs in the first, though he did return to pitch in the second. Pitcher re-entry is allowed in spring training games.

Cantillo’s outing didn’t get any better once he returned. The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs in the second on an error, walk and Colt Emerson single, Brendan Donovan drove in a run with a groundout, and Raleigh added another on sac fly to go up 4-0.

Raleigh would add another double to the corner in left in the fourth inning to score Donovan, who singled in the prior at-bat.
