Top Mariners prospect goes yard in return from injury

Top Seattle Mariners prospect Farmelo eager to make his return

Farmelo, an outfielder ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Seattle Mariners’ farm system by MLB Pipeline, slugged a two-run home run in his season debut for the High-A Everett AquaSox on Tuesday. The 20-year-old outfielder had been out since suffering a torn ACL last June.

Farmelo, who’s a left-handed hitter, got a hold of a pitch on the outside corner from Eugene Emeralds left-hander Cesar Perdomo and took it out to right-center field to put the AquaSox ahead 2-0 in the top of fifth at PK Park in Eugene, Ore. It stood up as the game-winner, as the Sox prevailed 2-1. Farmelo finished the game 1 for 4. You can see the home run in the video below.

The ACL injury Farmelo suffered last year derailed what was a strong first pro season for the 2023 first-round pick. At just 19 years old, he hit .264 with an .819 OPS, 10 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 25 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 46 games with Single-A Modesto.

Farmelo is the 92nd overall prospect in Pipeline’s rankings and one of seven M’s prospects in their top 100. He’s also the No. 66 overall prospect in Baseball America’s ranking and one of a whopping nine Mariners on that publication’s top-100 list.

Many of those highly regarded prospects are just north of Seattle on the same team as Farmelo in Everett. The AquaSox’s roster also includes switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, outfielder Lazaro Montes and infielders Colt Emerson and Michael Arroyo – all of whom are ranked top-100 prospects by MLB Pipeline and Baseball America.
