Mariners Roster Moves: Dylan Moore to IL, utility man called up

An unexpected injury has left the Seattle Mariners without one of their early-season standouts.

The Mariners placed 2024 American League Gold Glove winner Dylan Moore on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with right hip inflammation. Taking his place on the active roster is utility man Samad Taylor, who gets the call up from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.

Moore’s placement on the IL is retroactive to Saturday, April 26.

The 32-year-old Moore is hitting .286 with six home runs, nine RBIs, 16 runs, and five stolen bases in 23 games. He also has a .346 on-base percentage and .557 slugging mark for a .903 OPS, and he’s been especially dangerous against left-handed pitch, slashing .385/.485/.962 for a 1.446 OPS with five homers in 33 plate appearances against southpaws in 2025.

Moore’s efforts earned him AL Player of the Week honors for April 14-20, the first of back-to-back AL Player of the Week awards won by M’s hitters. Jorge Polanco was given the most recent award Monday.

Moore, who won the AL Gold Glove last year as a utility player, has appeared at every position on the field this season except left field, center field, catcher and pitcher.

The 26-year-old Taylor has appeared in 34 career MLB games, all but three of which came in 2023 with the Kansas City Royals. He had a brief stint with the M’s early in 2024 but spent the majority of the year with the Rainiers.

The speedy Taylor is off to a great start this season with Tacoma, slashing .321/.390/.560 for a .949 OPS with five homers, five doubles, 14 RBIs, 12 runs, and six stolen bases on seven attempts in 24 games.

A 2016 MLB Draft pick by Cleveland in the 10th round, the 5-foot-8 Taylor has played second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions as a pro. He has primarily played center field for the Rainiers this year.

Besides Moore, the Mariners currently have starting pitchers Logan Gilbert and George Kirby, outfielder Victor Robles, second baseman Ryan Bliss, and relief pitchers Matt Brash, Jackson Kowar and Gregory Santos on the injured list.

Additionally, first baseman Rowdy Tellez (hand) and third baseman Ben Williamson (back spasms) were both out of the lineup Sunday, and the switch-hitting Polanco has been limited to swinging from the left side and serving as the designated hitter due to a side issue. All three are starting Tuesday night, but right fielder Luke Raley is not after being scratched.
