Mariners player wins AL Player of the Week, and it may surprise you

The Seattle Mariners had a big week, especially at the plate, so it’s not all that surprising that one of their hitters was named American League Player of the Week on Monday.
It’s a little surprising which Mariners hitter took the honors, though.
Mariners rookie Ben Williamson doesn’t just belong – he’s been key
Utility man Dylan Moore is the AL Player of the Week after going 10 for 26 (.385) with three home runs, a double, six runs, five RBIs and a 1.177 OPS in six games played since last Monday.
The 32-year-old Moore is certainly deserving of the award, but another Mariners hitter has been garnering a lot of attention and could have just as easily won: catcher Cal Raleigh.
The weekly awards are given for periods from Monday through Sunday, and Raleigh’s chances would have been better if it was instead given a few days earlier. In nine games since April 11, Raleigh is 11 for 37 (.297) with seven homers, two doubles, 10 runs, 12 RBIs and a 1.314 OPS. But in the seven games from April 14-20, Raleigh had “just” five homers, six runs, nine RBIs, a .267 average and 1.171 OPS.

Raleigh entered Monday tied for the MLB lead with nine home runs this season.
OK, but enough about the player who could have been given the award. Let’s get back to the player who rightfully won it – though let’s also take one last second to acknowledge that it’s a pretty good sign for the Mariners’ offense that they had two players in the conversation to win.
Dylan Moore, Player of the Week
This is the first weekly award win for Moore in his career, and the first for the Mariners this season. The previous Mariners winner was Julio Rodríguez on Sept. 21, 2024.
Moore’s biggest game last week was a 3-for-5 performance where he hit a pair of homers on April 15 at Cincinnati. He also homered to lead off Sunday’s win over Toronto (which happened to be soon followed by a two-run shot by Raleigh in the same inning).
On the season, Moore is slashing .316/.371/.596 for a .967 OPS. He’s second on the Mariners with five homers and five stolen bases. He’s been especially dangerous when facing left-handed pitchers, slashing .429/.520/1.143 for a 1.663 OPS against southpaws in 21 at-bats.

Moore has helped the Mariners (12-10) win four straight series, and eight of their last 10 games.
This year, Moore has played every position except for left field, center field, catcher and pitcher. Moore’s a superior defender, as evidenced by the AL Gold Glove he won last year as a utility player.
A seventh-round MLB Draft pick out of Central Florida in 2015 by the Texas Rangers, Moore has played all seven of his MLB seasons with the Mariners.
The NL Player of the Week award went to Fernando Tatís Jr. of the San Diego Padres.
The Mariners begin the third and final series of their current road trip at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 2:30 with the pregame show.
