Rowdy’s Revenge: Tellez homers off pitcher he was traded for

Back in July 2021, Rowdy Tellez was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the Milwaukee Brewers. Up to that point, Tellez had spent the entirety of his career in the Blue Jays’ organization, which drafted him in 2013.

On Friday night, Tellez got a bit of revenge.

In the second inning of the Seattle Mariners’ series opener in Toronto, Tellez pulled a first-pitch fastball over the right-field fence for a 373-foot solo home run.

And the opposing pitcher who gave up Tellez’s blast?

None other Blue Jays right-hander Bowden Francis – one of the two players Tellez was dealt for in that 2021 trade.

After being traded by the Blue Jays, Tellez spent two and a half seasons in Milwaukee. His time with the Brewers included a 35-homer campaign in 2022. He then spent 2023 with the Pittsburgh Pirates before signing a minor league deal with Seattle in February.

Tellez earned an opening-day roster spot after a strong spring, but has struggled early on this season. He entered Friday with just a .111 batting average in 36 at-bats.

Tellez’s blast on Friday was his second homer of the season.
