After 3 DFAs, Mariners finally lose veteran pitcher

Casey Lawrence seemed to be on a path to being an answer for an obscure Seattle Mariners trivia question, but that’s no longer the case.

Three observations as Seattle Mariners win 6th straight series

After being designated for assignment for the third time this season, Lawrence was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. It was a bit a full circle moment, as Lawrence’s first stint in Seattle in 2017 was a result of the M’s claiming him off waivers from the Blue Jays.

The 37-year-old right-hander provided some valuable innings early for an injury-riddled Mariners pitching staff that’s currently without starters Logan Gilbert and George Kirby and high-leverage reliever Matt Brash. In four appearances, he had a 1-1 record, 3.60 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 10 innings. Lawrence had two scoreless outings, both of which came against the Blue Jays. He also made his MLB debut with Toronto in 2017.

Lawrence last pitched on Friday in relief of Gilbert, who left the game after just three innings with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He allowed eight runs (just two earned) over five innings. The veteran was designated for assignment the following day when relievers Troy Taylor and Tayler Saucedo were recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

Lawrence was also DFA’d on April 14 and April 20 but ended up back with Tacoma each time.

In 63 career MLB games over five seasons, Lawrence is 5-5 with a 6.51 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 101 strikeouts over 134 innings pitched.

The Mariners begin a two-game home series against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. Radio coverage can be heard on 710 AM Seattle Sports or the Seattle Sports app, starting with the pregame show at 5:30 p.m. M’s right-hander Bryce Miller (1-3 record, 4.21 ERA) is set to face Angels right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (1-3, 5.47).
