The latest on Dominic Canzone’s hamstring injury

The Seattle Mariners are planning to evaluate outfielder/designated hitter Dominic Canzone’s hamstring on Wednesday, Seattle Sports’ Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported Tuesday afternoon.

Seattle Mariners’ biggest problem compounded by bad luck

Canzone, who injured his hamstring trying to beat out a throw to first base during the sixth inning of Sunday’s win over the Boston Red Sox, was out of Seattle’s lineup for its series opener against the Pirates on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Drayer reported Canzone took part in running drills pregame and was expected to take some swings in the batting cages as well.

The Mariners are giving Canzone another day off with the hamstring and will evaluate how it feels tomorrow. Dom did some running drills earlier and is expected to hit in the cages this afternoon.

The good news for the Mariners is that Canzone appears to have avoided a stint on the injured list, at least for now. Outfielder Connor Joe was optioned to the minors when Randy Arozarena was reinstated from the IL earlier in the day after recovering from his own hamstring injury.

Canzone has been one of the Mariners’ best hitters this season, slashing .281/.353/.562 with 12 homers and a team-high .915 OPS.

The left-handed-hitting slugger has been particularly hot this month. He’s hitting .352 with a 1.120 OPS, five homers, two doubles and one triple in 19 games. He’s also struck out just seven times in 60 plate appearances.

With Canzone out of the lineup on Tuesday, Victor Robles will start in left field and bat eighth against Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller. Arozarena is the designated hitter and batting fifth in his return.
