The state of the Seattle Mariners’ roster has gone from bad to worse.

Second baseman Ryan Bliss, who has had some key moments early this season, is going to miss significant time as he has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps tear.

Mariners share update on how long Victor Robles could be out

Taking the place of Bliss on Seattle’s 26-man active roster is switch-hitting infielder Leo Rivas, who has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners have also selected right-handed pitcher Casey Lawrence from Tacoma and designated righty Jesse Hahn for assignment.

The 25-year-old Bliss was in obvious pain after a big swing and miss when he struck out against Houston’s Framber Valdez to end the second inning of a 2-1 loss Tuesday night. Bliss played the rest of the game, even smacking a double to the base of the wall in left-center and making a spectacular play on a hard hit that caromed off second base (video below) to save a run in the 10th inning of the 12-inning game.

Bliss joins right fielder Victor Robles as starting Mariners position players to land on the IL this week with significant injuries.

With Bliss out, Seattle’s options at second base include Rivas, veterans Jorge Polanco and Donovan Solano, and 2024 American League Gold Glove utility player Dylan Moore. Polanco began the year as Seattle’s third baseman and has been the team’s best hitter when in the lineup, but he’s started just six of the Mariners’ 12 games due to either rest coming off offseason knee surgery, a brief paternity list stint, and now a soreness issue with his side. Polanco did not play Saturday, Sunday (other than for one batter at first base) or Tuesday, but is the designated hitter in Wednesday’s lineup.

A second-round MLB Draft pick out of Auburn by Arizona in 2021, Bliss came to the Mariners organization in a 2023 trade centered around Paul Sewald going from Seattle to the Diamondbacks. Bliss made his MLB debut in 2024 and has been the Mariners’ starting second baseman this season, slashing .200/.282/.314 with a home run, a double and two stolen bases. And while Bliss entered the year with defensive questions at second, he has impressed in the field.

Rivas, 27, is 7 for 19 (.368) with two home runs, two doubles and a 1.237 OPS in six games with Tacoma in 2025. He appeared in 43 games for the Mariners as a rookie last season, hitting .233 with a double, a triple and two stolen bases.

The 35-year-old Hahn was selected to Seattle’s roster from Tacoma on Saturday and appeared in a pair of games for the Mariners, allowing just one unearned run in four innings with a three strikeouts and four walks (three intentional). A minor league signing in free agency this offseason, Hahn had last pitched in MLB in 2021 with Kansas City.

Lawrence, 37, has pitched twice as a starter with Tacoma this season, allowing five earned runs over 10 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts to three walks. He last pitched in the majors in 2023 with St. Louis, and previously played for the Mariners in 2017 and 2018.

The Mariners play the rubber match of a three-game series against the Astros at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday at T-Mobile Park. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports begins at noon with the pregame show.
