J.P. Crawford did it again.

For the second time in as many nights, the Seattle Mariners shortstop delivered a spectacular web gem.

In the top of the second inning of Tuesday evening’s game, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña hit a hard grounder to Crawford’s right. Crawford backhanded the ball and made an off-balanced throw off one foot to first baseman Donovan Solano, who stretched and picked it off one hop to get the out.

It was a particularly high-degree-of-difficulty-play given that Peña’s has 87th percentile of sprint speed, according to Baseball Savant.

Crawford’s latest web gem came after he robbed Houston catcher Victor Caratini of a base hit with a dazzling diving stop in the ninth inning of Seattle’s 4-3 series-opening win over the Astros on Monday night. With the Mariners clinging to a one-run lead, Caratini led off the ninth with a hard liner up the middle that bounced off the mound. Crawford made a full-extension dive to snag the ball and then threw from his knees to get Caratini out at first.

Crawford, who won the American League Gold Glove Award during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, is off to a slow start at the plate. Heading into Tuesday night, he was batting just .138 with four hits in 29 at-bats.

But over the past two nights, he has certainly made his presence felt with his glove.
