Mariners make another roster move with Jorge Polanco out
The Seattle Mariners will be without one of the best hitters of the early going this season for a few days, but for a good reason.

The Seattle Mariners will be without one of the best hitters from the early days of the season for a few games.
The reason is a good one, however.
Roster Moves: Mariners add bullpen depth, option starting pitcher
Switch-hitting third baseman Jorge Polanco is out of the lineup Tuesday and going on the paternity list with his wife expecting the birth of their child in Seattle, according to MLB.com Mariners reporter Daniel Kramer. Leo Rivas has been called up from Triple-A Tacoma to fill Polanco’s roster spot.
Polanco, 31, is 6 for 15 in four games this season with a home run and four RBIs. His homer was the game-winning hit in the Mariners’ 4-2 comeback victory over the Athletics on opening day.

The veteran is in his second season with Seattle. He was acquired in a trade prior to the 2024 season, and returned to the Mariners in free agency earlier this year.
Polanco struggled in 2024, slashing .213/.296/.355 for a .651 OPS in 118 games while playing through lower body injuries. Following offseason knee surgery, he had an impressive spring training and has gotten off to a strong start at the plate in 2025.
Prior to coming to Seattle, Polanco spent his entire career with the Minnesota Twins organization, including 10 big league seasons. He hit 33 home runs and drove in 98 runs in 2021, and was an American League All-Star in 2019.
Rivas, 27, made his MLB debut with the Mariners in 2024 and was a positive contributor with 0.3 fWAR in 43 games. He slashed .233/.333/.274 for a .607 OPS with a double, triple, three stolen bases and 10 walks to 24 strikeouts.
Rivas appeared at second base, third base, shortstop and even pitched in a pair of games for the M’s last season.
Utility man Miles Mastrobuoni is set to start at third base in place of Polanco on Tuesday night.
