Top pick, 3 of Mariners’ top 100 prospects to start season in Everett

Three of the Mariners’ seven prospects who are ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 100, as well as their 2024 first-round pick, will start the 2025 season with the High-A Everett AquaSox.

Top-ranked Mariners prospect shortstop/third baseman Colt Emerson, outfielder Lazaro Montes, second baseman/shortstop Michael Arroyo and switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje headline the opening roster for the AquaSox, which was revealed Tuesday morning.

Emerson, who is the No. 19 prospect in all of baseball, is rejoining the AquaSox after being promoted from Single-A Modesto in August. He hit just .225 with a .648 OPS and seven extra-base hits in 29 games with Everett last season, but tore up the Arizona Fall League afterwards with a .370 average, .972 OPS, nine doubles and eight stolen bases over 13 games.

The 19-year-old Emerson got his first taste of the Cactus League this spring and went 2 for 17 with a double and a home run.

Montes, Seattle’s second-ranked prospect and No. 41 in MLB, was promoted to Everett last June and batted .260 with an .805 OPS, eight doubles and eight home runs over 51 games. After early struggles with the AquaSox, he delivered a scorching month of August with a .411 batting average, 1.253 OPS and seven homers.

The 20 year old also made his Cactus League debut this spring, swatting a pair of home runs while going 5-for-18 with a 1.102 OPS.

Arroyo, the seventh-ranked M’s prospect and No. 96 overall, was promoted to the AquaSox last season alongside Montes. After a strong showing with Modesto, the right-handed-hitting Arroyo improved put up even stronger numbers in Everett. In 60 games, he hit .290 with a .916 OPS, 15 doubles, two triples and 12 home runs.

The 20-year-old Arroyo went 2 for 11 with a double in his first Cactus League action this spring. He also played for Team Colombia during the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in March.

Cijntje is the Mariners’ ninth-ranked prospect and one of the more intriguing ones in all of baseball. The 21 year old pitched with both arms during the Seattle’s spring breakout game last month, and the M’s have an interesting plan Cijntje that you can read more about here. The Mississippi State product’s Everett debut will be his first minor league game.

Shortstop Tai Peete (No. 12 in the organization) was another notable prospect named to the roster. A first-round pick in 2023, Peete hit .269 with a .751 OPS, 26 doubles, nine triples, seven home runs and 45 stolen bases with Modesto in 2024. The 19 year old starred in the M’s spring breakout game, going 3 for 3 with a home run.

The AquaSox begin their season April 4 at Spokane and play their home opener April 8 against Hillsboro at 7:05 p.m.
