It wasn’t always pretty and some familiar problems were on display again, but the M’s salvaged a series split in their four-game set against the Athletics.
Here are eight stats that stand out from the opening series:
• .175 – The Mariners hit just .175 over the four-game series, which featured the team mustering just five hits in each contest. Only the Twins and Mets had lower batting averages through the opening weekend.
• 16 – Seattle worked 16 walks over the first three games before having zero in the series finale. Those walks didn’t result in much production, as the M’s mustered just eight total runs over four games. But at the very least, the opportunities are there thanks to free bases.
• 2-for-19 – Speaking of those walks not resulting in much, Seattle went just 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position, and only one of those hits resulted in a run. If Mariners want their patience at the plate to pay off, they will need to start getting hits with ducks on the pond.
• 5 – Third baseman Jorge Polanco checked in with five hits in three games during the series, including the go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning during the M’s 4-2 win in the opener. Polanco had Seattle’s first two hits in the opener and three total on the night. He had just four three-hit games last season and did not accomplish the feat until July 27. Three games is far too small of a sample size to declare Polanco has turned things around, but his performance at the plate was the most positive development for the M’s in their first series.
• 4 – The amount of games it took Julio Rodríguez to hit his first home run, which is tied for the earliest in his career with the 2023 season. Rodríguez’s mammoth, go-ahead homer on Sunday was his first in the regular season during the month of March, and it came 19 games earlier than his first home run last year.

• 9 –The Mariners had their streak of nine consecutive home series victories against the Athletics snapped with the four-game split. The M’s last home series loss against their division rival came in June of 2021. They’re also 7-0-2 overall in their past nine series against the A’s dating back to September of 2022.
• 2.66 – Mariners starters picked up where they left off in 2024 with a strong showing in the opening series. The starters combined for a 2.66 ERA and allowed just 14 hits and six walks while striking out 21 batters over 23 2/3 innings.
• 0.72 – Bryan Woo continued his dominance of Athletics with six strong innings of one-run ball on his way to earning the victory in the series finale. That performance actually raised his career ERA against Seattle’s American League West rival. Woo had allowed just two runs over 31 1/3 innings against the A’s coming in. He’s now 6-0 with a 0.72 ERA against them.
