Mariners rookie Ben Williamson delivers web gem, robs Bregman of hit

Seattle Mariners rookie third baseman Ben Williamson is known for his elite glovework.

On Wednesday night, he used his fielding prowess to rob a longtime Mariners nemesis of a base hit.

With Seattle holding a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning at Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox third baseman and former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman hit a one-out chopper down the third-base line. Williamson took a couple steps in, backhanded it off a short hop and then circled around Red Sox base runner Jarren Duran in third-base foul territory before firing a running, one-footed throw to first baseman Donovan Solano for the putout.

Williamson’s highlight-reel play helped the Mariners maintain a two-run lead, as the ensuing batter flew out to end the frame.

It was the latest in an ever-growing list of memorable moments and milestones for Williamson, who was called up last week to help reinforce a Seattle infield that’s been stretched thin by injury issues.

Williamson, a 2023 second-round draft pick, hit a 105.8 mph base hit in his first MLB at-bat on April 15 and singled in each of his first three games. The 24-year-old then hit his first career home run this past Saturday. And through the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game, he was 3 for 4 with an RBI single.

Since being called up, Williamson is hitting .321 with a homer, a double and three RBIs in 28 at-bats. It’s been a highly impressive start to his big league career, especially since he’s best known for his defense.

Williamson quickly rose through Seattle’s system after being drafted out of William & Mary and making his pro debut in July 2023. He’s the Mariners’ first non-pitching prospect to reach the majors in 150 minor league games or fewer since catcher Mike Zunino in 2013.
