The Seattle Mariners placed center fielder Julio Rodríguez on 7-day concussion injured list on Friday ahead of their series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Utilityman Miles Mastrobuoni was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Rodríguez went under concussion protocol Thursday night after being struck in the back of his helmet by a throw while running the bases in the bottom of the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels. The center fielder advanced to third base after the ball ricocheted into the outfield and remained in the game following a lengthy meeting with manager Dan Wilson and a team trainer, but he was eventually replaced in the field by Victor Robles in the top of the third inning.

Robles was hit in the arm by a pitch in his first at-bat and had to leave the game shortly after, but X-rays taken Thursday night were negative and he was in the lineup in place of Rodríguez in center field Friday night.

Rodríguez has gone through a power outage over the past month following a record-setting May for the 25-year-old star. After slugging 10 home runs in May, the most in a single month during his career, Rodríguez has just two homers in 27 games since June 1.

In 87 games this season, the three-time All-Star is batting .249 with a .747 OPS, 14 homers and 15 doubles.

He will be eligible to return from the IL on Friday, July 10, when Seattle begins its final series before the All-Star break against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mastrobuoni, 30, appeared in eight games for the M’s earlier this season, hitting .217 with a .487 OPS.

In addition to the roster moves with Rodríguez and Mastrobuoni, the Mariners transferred reliever Cooper Criswell (right shoulder strain) to the 60-day IL.
