Seattle Mariners place 3B Brendan Donovan on 10-day injured list

The injury that kept Brendan Donovan out of the lineup this weekend for the Seattle Mariners will keep him out of action for at least another week.

The Mariners placed their starting third baseman and key offseason acquisition on the 10-day injured list Monday afternoon with a left groin muscle strain. Donovan’s placement on the IL is retroactive to April 18.

Taking Donovan’s place on the 26-man active roster is infielder Will Wilson, who was selected from the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. To make room for Wilson on the 40-man roster, veteran utility player Miles Mastrobuoni has been transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.

The 29-year-old Donovan left Friday’s Mariners loss to Texas with what was termed a hip issue. He also missed a few games early this month due with a groin issue and later had an illness that limited his availability.

When Donovan has been on the field, he’s been one of Seattle’s best hitters this season. In 18 games, he has a .304 batting average (17 for 56) with three home runs, three doubles, eight RBIs, nine walks, a .437 on-base percentage, .518 slugging percentage and .954 OPS.

Donovan, who hits left-handed, is the Mariners’ usual leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching.

The Mariners made a big three-team trade in February to land Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals after months of speculation that Seattle would acquire the one-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner.

The 27-year-old Wilson was the No. 15 overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels out of North Carolina State. He has a .275 average (11 for 40) with a home run, two doubles, seven walks and a .783 OPS in 14 games in Triple-A this year.

Wilson played in 34 games last season with the Cleveland Guardians, going 15 for 78 (.192) while appearing at both second base and third base.

The 30-year-old Mastrobuoni has not yet played this season after suffering a right calf strain playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic last month.

The 10-13 Mariners, who took two of three in their weekend series against Texas, open a three-game series against the Athletics at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park at 6:40 p.m. Monday night. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports begins at 5:30 with the pregame show.
