Canzone returns as Mariners’ lineup nearly 100% for Game 2 vs Pirates

It’s been a long time since the Seattle Mariners’ lineup looked this close to how they planned it going into the season.

Dominic Canzone is set to return to action in Game 2 of the Mariners’ road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 3:40 p.m., hitting sixth and serving as the designated hitter.

The only regular position player not active for Seattle now is utility man Brendan Donovan, a 2025 National League All-Star and the Mariners’ key offseason acquisition. He remains on the 10-day injured list with a groin strain and is not expected back until sometime next month.

Second baseman Cole Young is the lone hitter in the typical Mariners lineup not to miss a game due to an injury concern in June. Young, who hit a go-ahead homer in his hometown of Pittsburgh in Tuesday’s 3-2 win, is also the only M’s player to appear in all 80 games this season.

The 28-year-old Canzone exited Seattle’s game Sunday after pulling his hamstring running to first base, joining Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodríguez as M’s players to deal with minor hamstring issues of late. Canzone did not play in Tuesday’s series opener in Pittsburgh.

Canzone has been one of the Mariners’ best producers at the plate in 2026, owning a .281/.353/.562 slash line for a team-high .915 OPS with 12 homers.

Canzone has especially hit well this month. In 19 games in June, he has a .352 batting average, 1.120 OPS, five homers, two doubles and one triple, and has struck out just seven times in 60 plate appearances.

It will be a marquee pitching matchup, with 2025 American League All-Star Bryan Woo (3.94 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) on the mound for the Mariners against Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft (3.18 ERA, 1.103 WHIP). Twice in Woo’s last four starts, he has thrown seven scoreless innings with three hits or less. Ashcraft, who is in his second MLB season, is tied for 10th in baseball with nine quality starts this year.

At 41-39, the M’s enter the day ahead of the Athletics by 2 1/2 games for first place in the AL West. With at least one win over the final two games of the series, Seattle would clinch its first series victory on the road since late May.

Wednesday’s game will mark the midway point of the 162-game season for the M’s.
