Logan Gilbert will start the Seattle Mariners’ next piggyback outing on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians, the right-hander told Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk on Tuesday morning.
Gilbert said Emerson Hancock is slated to follow as the second half of the piggyback tandem.
Mariners’ rotation going back to piggyback – with a twist
The Mariners initially went to their piggyback strategy in mid-May to address having six healthy starting pitchers following Bryce Miller’s return from the injured list. During that initial iteration of the strategy, they went three turns through the rotation, with Miller and Luis Castillo serving as the piggyback tandem each time.
Seattle then temporarily employed a six-man rotation on its road trip earlier this month, which came during a stretch of 16 games in 17 days.
The Mariners are now returning to the piggyback – but this time, with all six starters taking turns participating in the piggyback tandem every sixth game.
