Seattle Mariners put shortstop J.P. Crawford on 10-day IL

Seattle Mariners shortstop and leadoff man J.P. Crawford has landed on the injured list for a second time this season.

Crawford was placed on the 10-day IL ahead of Monday’s series opener in Baltimore with a right hand contusion. The move is retroactive to Saturday, June 6.

Mariners down another SS as Colt Emerson scratched

The Mariners have recalled infielder Ryan Bliss from Triple-A Tacoma to take Crawford’s spot on the 26-man active roster.

The 31-year-old Crawford exited Friday’s Mariners loss in Detroit after taking a 96 mph sinker from Tigers starter Framber Valdez to his hand in the third inning. He remained on Seattle’s bench on Saturday and Sunday.

It could be a short stay on the IL for Crawford. Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported Monday from Baltimore that “Crawford will stay with the team on the road for now and continue to take treatment on the bruised hand.”

Crawford joins third baseman Brendan Donovan (groin) and Cal Raleigh (oblique) as key hitters on the IL for Seattle. There is no timetable yet for a return by Donovan, who was the Mariners’ usual leadoff hitter prior to his injury, while Raleigh started a rehab assignment Sunday with High-A Everett.

Prior to the injury, Crawford had been heating up at the plate. In his last 10 games, he has a .317/.383/.634 slash line for a 1.017 OPS with four home runs and a double. While he’s hitting just .228 on the season, he’s getting on base at a .356 clip and has a solid .765 OPS. He also has 10 homers in 55 games, putting him on pace to break his single-season career high of 19.

Crawford started the season on the IL, missing Seattle’s first seven games while recovering from right shoulder inflammation that slowed him down in spring training.

With Crawford out of action, second baseman Cole Young is in the leadoff spot again Monday against the Orioles. Rookie Colt Emerson has shifted from third base to play shortstop in Crawford’s absence, with Patrick Wisdom taking over at third.

Bliss, 26, has hit .204 with a home run, 11 doubles and nine stolen bases in 51 games at Triple-A this year. He has played 45 MLB games in his career, all with the Mariners. Bliss began the 2025 season as the Mariners’ starting second baseman but tore his left biceps early in the campaign. He then suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee last September while on a rehab assignment with Tacoma.

The AL West-leading Mariners (34-32) take on the Orioles (31-35) at 3:35 p.m. Monday, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 2:30 with the pregame show.
