Mariners rookie Colt Emerson shares 2 things behind his good start

The Seattle Mariners couldn’t have expected much better from Colt Emerson in his first three weeks in the big leagues.

The highly-touted prospect has hit the ground running for the Mariners, slashing .255/.333/.549 for an .882 OPS with three home runs, four doubles and a triple in 16 games entering Friday.

And the Mariners have taken off with Emerson manning third base, too. They have gone 11-5 since calling the 20-year-old Emerson up from Triple-A, a stretch that included a season-best eight-game winning streak.

Emerson joined Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob at T-Mobile Park following the Mariners’ successful recent homestand, and he shared a couple of things that have helped him acclimate to the big leagues right away.

On top of the list is that Emerson is just being himself.

“Two weeks in, three weeks in or whatever it is, just trying to get settled in and just really trying to stick to an approach, stick to my routines that I was doing in Triple-A,” Emerson said, “because they say the biggest thing when you get to the big leagues is don’t change. I mean, you got to the big leagues because you were doing good at what you were already doing. So I think for me, I was putting an emphasis on just not changing anything. And I think that’s helped me a lot having success early right now just because I’m not trying to be somebody I’m not, I’m just trying to be myself.”

Emerson said doing that is part of the clubhouse culture, which is connected to the other thing helping him succeed as a rookie.

“Honestly, they preach that in the clubhouse and this clubhouse has my back. (There are) a lot of great dudes in this clubhouse that are exactly what I just said, that they’re themselves and they’re comfortably themselves. So for me, it’s pretty easy when you got that to look up to.”

Emerson had a list of teammates that have particularly helped him thus far.

“J.P. (Crawford), Cal (Raleigh), ‘Naylz’ (Josh Naylor), Julio (Rodríguez), all those guys – ‘Donnie’ (Brendan Donovan)… It’s everybody, it really is. I mean, the camaraderie, the way this team fights, a lot of great guys to look up to and I’m very fortunate to be in a clubhouse with these type of guys.”
